All year I’d planned on running the Midnight Run on New Year’s Eve here in Toronto. I’ve been running like a beast all year and I thought what better way to kick off the new year than to RUN full throttle into it at the stroke of midnight!
But as it grew closer, and after much deliberation, I decided I just couldn’t in good conscience justify the $95 (pre-tax) entry fee, especially since I have no desire to “party” and can’t eat or drink any of the post race offerings. It was essentially my one year “runniversary”. This would be the first race I would be repeating since starting to run “competitively” (not that I’m really competing against anyone but myself of course, and that pesky bastard “personal best”) and so this would be the first time I could directly compare my progress.
I’m not gonna lie. This worried me. What if my time was the same, or worse yet, slower?! I know it’s ultimately not about that, but come on, everyone who runs strives for, no expects to do better every time they go out.
Anyway, I did a couple of race distance runs early in the week, then tapered off to just walking/stretching, eating right, hydrating. I don’t know why this one was so important to do right, but it was. A year ago I was glued to my tv, transfixed by the horror unfolding in Boston. I couldn’t believe that someone would target a sporting event that isn’t ruled by politics and large salaries, but rather by regular, everyday people, supporting charities, and striving to be better and reach a goal. (not that targeting any other event would be more acceptable…
This was by far my hardest race yet. I knew coming into it that it was going to be cold. But we’re talking bone chilling cold kids. (windchills in the -20’s)
By the end of the 1st K, my thighs were a block of ice.
By the 2k mark, in the shadows of the buildings which made that stretch into a wind-tunnel, I sincerely couldn’t feel/sense my lower extremities, and had no idea how I was propelling myself forward at all.
At around 3.5K, the nausea kicked in.
Despite all of that, the calming, encouraging voice on my Nike app was telling me I was on pace to a personal record, so I kept pushing.
As happens during these races, there are random shouts of encouragement along the route between runners. I think that is one of my favorite things. (besides finishing!) I did miss my traditional mid-race high five with my Sistah from anothah mistah! (Kathy)(she’s usually passing me on the way back…) Today I was the encourager, giving someone a pat on the back when she looked like she was about to give up, and telling her to keep up the good work!

Once the course leveled out, it was time for one final rally, and a strong running finish! Result? a new race day PR!
Once inside Steamwhistle Brewery, while the feeling slowly returned to my legs, I enjoyed the live Irish band while eating a piping hot bowl of chili (sadly couldn’t partake of accompanying beer & bun, damn you gluten!!) and chatted with the top finisher of the Woman’s 60-69 category! (which we discovered via my sportsstats app while talking!) She didn’t begin running until her late 50’s! Yay for picking up new athletic skills later in life!
I’m now home, watching the closing ceremonies of the ParaOlympics, waiting for the last remaining chunk of frozen ass muscle to thaw before sinking into a nice warm bath!
Ho Ho Holy Cow! We were running in the snow batman!! Ok, just light flurries, but still! What fun! Race #4 under our belts!
Once again my “sole Sistah” Kathy joined me in my quest for a personal best! She has been running longer than me, so she is usually on her way back with an encouraging high five before I make the half way point.
This was a smaller event (which made me panic a little that I would be the last one dragging my ass across the finish line) (I wasn’t … *whew*) But it was full of energy, and a relatively simple, easy course. And there were Christmas carols and hot chocolate at the end, so you can go wrong there! What’s cool about this event is that the Santa Shuffle happens on the same day in many cities across Canada. So while our little event was smaller, on the grand scale of things, there were a lot of people running today!
I’ve just completed my 3rd 5K, just 6 seconds off my “PB” (personal best, a term I learned along the way). Again, it was a difficult day weather wise. Crazy windy!! and cold, with a touch of sprinkles.(thankfully it never turned into heavy rain)
And unlike the Scotiabank Marathon, which completely overwhelmed me emotionally, this time it didn’t phase me.
And this time I was ready. I had been training. And I had proper shoes, and proper clothes, and confidence, and music!
I knew not to get caught up in the adrenaline rush of the ‘group’ at the start, and keep my own pace, not theirs.
I felt strong. I felt good. And I was happy.
I smiled for a good portion of the run.
And this time when I finished, I laughed and high-fived my friend waiting at the finish. And even with the brutal winds, I just missed my PB by 6 seconds! LOL!
It is exhilarating. And it’s mine. I run for me. I run against me.
I’m not perfect, but I don’t have to be.
