Midnight Run & Party – ’14

All year I’d planned on running the Midnight Run on New Year’s Eve here in Toronto. I’ve been running like a beast all year and I thought what better way to kick off the new year than to RUN full throttle into it at the stroke of midnight!

But as it grew closer, and after much deliberation, I decided I just couldn’t in good conscience justify the $95 (pre-tax) entry fee, especially since I have no desire to “party” and can’t eat or drink any of the post race offerings. Plus, given the circumstances of my year leading up to it, it simply seemed… wrong. Continue reading “Midnight Run & Party – ’14”

Tannenbaum 10K

Since my Saturdays aren’t available, I had to forgo running the Santa Shuffle & the Resolution Run this year, and choose a Sunday event to close out my 2014 running season.

The only thing close, and on a Sunday, was the Tannenbaum 10K.

Did I want to do a 10K for my last hurrah? Not particularly. Especially not by myself (none of my running pals like winter running) and on a flat course.

But alas, this was all that was available to me, and well, if I’m planning on doing a half in 2015, I better start doing the longer designations asap! Continue reading “Tannenbaum 10K”

Scotiabank Waterfront Marathon Toronto 2014

Scotiabank Waterfront Marathon Toronto 2014It was essentially my one year “runniversary”. This would be the first race I would be repeating since starting to run “competitively” (not that I’m really competing against anyone but myself of course, and that pesky bastard “personal best”) and so this would be the first time I could directly compare my progress.

I’m not gonna lie. This worried me. What if my time was the same, or worse yet, slower?! I know it’s ultimately not about that, but come on, everyone who runs strives for, no expects to do better every time they go out.

Anyway,  I did a couple of race distance runs early in the week, then tapered off to just walking/stretching, eating right, hydrating. I don’t know why this one was so important to do right, but it was. Something has clicked within me and I really want to take this to the next level in 2015 (more on that later) Continue reading “Scotiabank Waterfront Marathon Toronto 2014”

10703940_10154588445895191_415053522590821777_nHappy Birthday to me!

First competitive run since the spring. (!)

TMI Alert: Woke up with my period, severe back cramps and diarrhea. (Really?! You’d think by 49 that would be the gift that no longer keeps on giving… Just sayin)

So, couldn’t eat or drink other than a couple of bites of raisin bread to line my stomach for the 2  Aleve I had to take for the cramps. Continue reading “Toronto 5k”

We Will Not Let Fear Rule Us…

Hangover run_1aA year ago I was glued to my tv, transfixed by the horror unfolding in Boston. I couldn’t believe that someone would target a sporting event that isn’t ruled by politics and large salaries, but rather by regular, everyday people, supporting charities, and striving to be better and reach a goal. (not that targeting any other event would be more acceptable…

I thought to myself, “next year, I will stand on the sidelines in Boston, in solidarity with those who survived, and remember those who didn’t” Continue reading “We Will Not Let Fear Rule Us…”

Downsview 5K

I’ve just completed my 3rd 5K,  just 6 seconds off my “PB” (personal best, a term I learned along the way).  Again, it was a difficult day weather wise. Crazy windy!! and cold, with a touch of sprinkles.(thankfully it never turned into heavy rain) And unlike the Scotiabank Marathon, which completely overwhelmed me emotionally,  this time it didn’t phase me. And this time I was … Continue reading Downsview 5K

Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront 5K

Those of you that know me, know that I don’t run unless I’m being chased, or there is bacon or booze waiting for me at the finish line. But something very personal is motivating me this month. My family has recently had to make use of the wonderful facilities at Ronald McDonald House in Toronto. So today I ran the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon 5k … Continue reading Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront 5K
